Setting out for an afternoon of trapezing, we had a brief sail in a Dart 16, which considering it was my first time sailing a cat went very well.
The Dart is pretty lively, but slow to manoevre. The wind had just shifted for the afternoon from light morning thermals to an afternoon sea breeze, so we struggled initially to tell which way the wind was coming. My first time sailing a cat I took the helm, and it was very stable and easy to sail. In light Force 2 breeze, we barely even lifted the windward hull yet still clipped along at a fair breeze. I did struggle to dump wind out of the main sail - let go of the sheet and the sail goes nowhere thanks to the 6:1 mainsheet that was rigged. We only had about 15 minutes, but I got a good feeling for it, and returning to the floating mooring, we dropped the jib and caught the mooring on the first attempt, to everyones' surprise. A great intro to cat sailing - I want more, plus kneepads, the tramp is painful!
